Verizon Foundation presents “Digital Nation”

With support from the Verizon Foundation, for the past 10 months PBS FRONTLINE and the production team at “Digital Nation,” have been exploring how digital media and the Web transformed virtually every aspect of the way we live. From the way we learn and work to the ways in which we socialize and even conduct war, nothing has had more of an impact on a single generation. But is the technology moving faster than we can adapt to it?

The answers to these questions will be explored in the broadcast premiere of PBS’s new multiplatform documentary “Digital Nation: Life on the Virtual Frontier,” which airs on Tuesday, Feb. 2, from 9 to 10:30 p.m. ET on PBS stations nationwide (check local listings). The documentary presents an in-depth exploration of what it means to be human in a 21st-century digital world. Continuing a line of investigation began with the 2008 FRONTLINE report “Growing Up Online,” award-winning producer Rachel Dretzin embarks on a journey to understand the implications of living in a world consumed by technology and the impact that this constant connectivity may have on future generations. “I’m amazed at the things my kids are able to do online, but I’m also a little bit panicked when I realize that no one seems to know where all this technology is taking us, or its long-term effects,” says Dretzin.

“Digital Nation” began online in March 2009. The centerpiece of the project is a user-generated video Web site where hundreds of people– teens, grandparents, online stars, avatars and everyone in between — have shared their video stories with us about life in the digital age. Users shared all parts of their lives, from romance to parenting to addiction, and in so doing, helped Frontline piece together a panorama of technology’s impact on ourselves and our world.

Frontline traveled to different cities and different corners of the web in a quest to hear how real people are coping with the challenges of raising a family in our plugged-in world. There were a lot of different stories – from the debate over “friending” your kids on Facebook, to the challenges of getting kids (or spouses!) to unplug, but this was a perspective many hadn’t heard.

Frontline still wants to hear from you. Take a look through these video submissions and share your thoughts, or better yet, send in a video telling them about your own “Digital Nation” experiences… And be sure to tune in to the Broadcast premier of “Digital Nation”, February 2 on PBS.
